Quirky and outrageous humour. Laughed a lot!
The night after the wine party that we saw in Episode 5 is the center for all the humorous scenes in this episode. Wu Kang Ren and Liu Shu Hong acted really well together to make that scene where Wei Fen Qing imagines Huo Ting En and Peng Xiao Bin coming at her suggestively really funny. Could not stop laughing at the outrageous humor there!
We enjoyed seeing the crossover characters from The Masked Lover. We haven’t actually watched this on-air Taiwanese drama, but we plan to watch it because the story sounds interesting.
From what we’ve read, the setup of The Masked Lover is that Wu Ping Fan (Mini Tsai), an ordinary girl with a quiet and simple life, takes on her twin sister’s identity, Wu Ping An (Mini Tsai). Wu Ping An is a mob boss. She goes into a coma after an accident which brings Wu Ping Fan to come in and assume her identity. Meanwhile, Gu Le Jun (Weber Yang) is Wu Ping Fan’s protector. He’s said to have an identity that will shake things up.
In this episode, the worlds of The Masked Lover and The Perfect Match collide when Wu Ping Fan struggles to answer Huo Ting En’s question of what her name is. He asks because he wanted to make sure that the wallet he picked up off from the ground outside a convenience store actually belongs to the girl who came to retrieve it. Wu Ping Fan looked uneasy when she was asked to confirm her identity. We’re presuming Wu Ping Fan is not comfortable with lying and saying she’s Wu Ping An.
Since this scene was in The Perfect Match, we wonder if this exact same scene was in The Masked Lover. We feel the scene looks to be just to promote and get more interest for the series, though… It worked! We’re even more curious about The Masked Lover now!
There were some more backstories in Episode 7. There’s Huo Ting En’s, Wei Fen Qing’s and a revisit of Huo Ting En’s sister’s backstory. These brought in some heart-to-heart moments between Huo Ting En and Wei Fen Qing. They’re getting that much more acquainted with each other. They are still not at the level of being romantic, though. Still very much a work relationship.
We’re told the 7 days are about up. The episode says one day left before the contract between Huo Ting En and Wei Fen Qing is up. This makes us wonder what will be next for the two. Will Wei Fen Qing continue to stay in La Mure or is she going back to the night market or elsewhere?
We got to see that Wei Fen Qing is getting a clue to the fact of Ah Wei having feelings for her. This was when he accompanied her in her morning shopping for ingredients. He told her he will be the one to accompany her every day to help her reclaim the Curry King title when her seven days under Huo Ting En’s training is up. It’s not this that gets Wei Fen Qing to think Ah Wei may have feelings for her, though. It’s when Ah Wei affectionately brushes locks of hair away from her face from the wind blowing at it. This entire talk about the seven days being up and Ah Wei wanting to be at Wei Fen Qing’s side as her support really makes us wonder what’s next for the love triangle…
The episode also revealed more about Huo Ting En’s stepmother and how she’s possibly a person working against Huo Ting En. Huo Ting En’s stepmother has so far not come across as very antagonistic. Most of the things that appears to be antagonistic are those reservations that Huo Tian Zhi keeps accepting that Huo Ting En is always questioning. These reservations, we’re assuming, are the doing of Huo Ting En’s stepmother.
Wei Fen Qing’s brother is entering Yanis—is going to enter Yanis. Interesting! Maybe we’ll get to see the setting move to the corporate office. Here’s hoping! :oP :oP.
Episode 7 Recap
Huo Ting En’s evening is attendance at a hotel’s grand opening of their restaurant. He finds Meng Ru Xi attending as well. He’s surprised. She’s also surprised to find Huo Ting En at this social gathering. However, the surprise for Meng Ru Xi seem to be an act when she has been previously told about the event by Huo Tian Zhi and she chose to attend. They have a conversation on who is the stalker between the two and whether fans and admirers would be jealous seeing them together. Onlookers in the room comment on their companies merging and being a good pair.
After the social gathering, Huo Ting En walks Meng Ru Xi home. A brief time discussing the catering, they’re outside Meng Ru Xi’s place. Meng Ru Xi is forward. She gives Huo Ting En a kiss goodnight that stuns Huo Ting En. Meng Ru Xi asks Huo Ting En if he’s forgotten the customary greeting in France having been away from the country for so long.
Meng Ru Xi now in her apartment cleaning off her make up in the bathroom, she recalls the kiss as she has a finger at her lips. She appears pleased with her actions.
Wei Fen Qing is at home and in bed after some time helping Ah Wei at his night market stall and fighting off some men harassing her night market friends. She sends a goodnight video message in response to Ah Wei’s message. After sending, she finds a video file of Huo Ting En. “Wei Fen Qing, I love you,” she hears.
The entire night through to the next morning and as she heads to work, the video has Wei Fen Qing frustrated with Huo Ting En and his nightmarish ‘I love you’ constantly going through her mind. She wakes up to a hallucination of Huo Ting saying ‘Good Morning. I love you’. ‘I love you’ pops into her head when her eyes catch onto the key in the ignition of her motorbike whilst waiting in traffic. Arriving at work where Peng Xiao Bin greets Huo Ting En, she imagines Peng Xiao Bin and Huo Ting En in a suggestive performance.
Wei Fen Qing tries getting Huo Ting En to confess what he said in the video. She asks if there was something deep within him he wanted to say to her. Huo Ting En seems to have a clue what she’s talking about, but maybe not the confession that was captured in the video. Huo Ting En says it’s not that important and quickly exits.
Peng Xiao Bin comes in with a reservation for white curry. Huo Ting En asks why these guests are wishing to have it when the restaurant doesn’t serve it. It was approved by Huo Tian Zhi. Huo Tian Zhi explains it’s his mum’s guests. He apologises to Huo Ting En for not taking care of it when he should have. He tells Huo Ting En he’ll go back and convince his mum about not accepting the guests. But again, Huo Ting En just accepts the reservation for white curry.
This reservation for white curry is a difficult one for Huo Ting En. A conversation between Peng Xiao Bin and Wei Fen Qing reveals white curry to be Huo Ting En’s sister’s favourite food and it has become something that brings up memories of her.
This association white curry has to his sister has Huo Ting En struggle to make it right. He’s unimpressed with the white curry when he tastes it. Wei Fen Qing, who had been assisting him on the side and listening to him teach her about white curry, noticed Huo Ting En’s inability to focus fully on making white curry when his movements were speedy and agitated. After seeing Huo Ting En’s negative reaction to the white curry he made, Wei Fen Qing repeats what he had told her about making good food: you can’t make good food if you don’t focus on it.
Huo Ting En exits the kitchen. He takes a breather outside, leaning again a pillar. When Wei Fen Qing finds Huo Ting En and asks if it’s that he’s feeling unwell, Huo Ting En gets up to leave. Wei Fen Qing pulls him back. Wei Fen Qing tries to have Huo Ting En acknowledge his pain so he can heal it. Huo Ting En seem to have no desire to continue a conversation with Wei Fen Qing about his business. He says to her there are two options for her two choose from: she leaves or he will leave.
Wei Fen Qing persists. Leaving is admitting defeat, Wei Fen Qing says, then elaborates that even if a chef is highly skilled and has a lot of experience, if they can’t put up a dish in a cooking contest, it’s useless. He’s forfeiting by doing this. These words seem to have some effect on Huo Ting En when he’s not rejecting them. Wei Fen Qing then says she would’ve challenged him on making white curry had she known about his inability to make it. She would have won even if she made one that didn’t taste good because he couldn’t make it. These words brings Huo Ting En’s fighting spirit back. He smiles. He finds these words to work well on him.
“Let’s go. Let’s head back inside,” Huo Ting En says to Wei Fen Qing. Before they are able to, though, Huo Ting En and Wei Fen Qing struggle to get up when they constantly get in each other’s way. Huo Ting En allows Wei Fen Qing to get up first before asking for a helping hand to help him get up from legs that have gone numb from his tiring sitting position.
Huo Ting En successfully makes white curry. The guests enjoy their white curry dish.
Wei Fen Qing is given a lesson on spices that she continuously finds as Huo Ting En secretly giving her messages of his feelings for her.
Wei Fen Qing is asked to taste and note down the spices in the five combinations of the 10 spices in the tray he’s arranged in front of her. The 10 spices are numbered from 0 – 9.
What Wei Fen Qing finds when she tastes each of the combinations are messages of love and affection:
- 5, 2, 0 – I love you.
- 3, 2, 0, 6, 9 – I want to love you forever.
- 2, 6, 0 – Secretly in love with you.
- 3, 7, 0 – I want to kiss you.
- 7, 8, 9, 5 – Hug me.
Huo Ting En makes Wei Fen Qing the more paranoid when his expression and actions reflect those words.
Huo Ting En checks Wei Fen Qing has correctly grouped them. She has. He then provides explanations for them. The first grouping, 5, 2, 0, is a group Huo Ting En likes very much. 3, 2, 0, 6, 9 is good to use and commonly used. 2, 6, 0 is the combination used in her curry shrimp mini burger. Huo Ting En tells Wei Fen Qing he thought she would get this grouping wrong. (We’re assuming Huo Ting En thought Wei Fen Qing would get this group wrong because her curry shrimp mini burger didn’t taste very good.)
With the secret love messages on her mind, Wei Fen Qing had been holding herself together up to this point. She loses her ability to take more of Huo Ting En’s secret messages with the last two groupings. She leaves before Huo Ting En finishes giving any sort of explanation about them because she hears Huo Ting En say he wasn’t sure whether to use 3, 7, 0 (I want to kiss you) first or 7, 8, 9, 5 (hug me) first and had asked Wei Fen Qing which one she liked.
At home, Wei Fen Qing is annoyed with the fact of her being the one feeling awkward about Huo Ting En’s confession when the person who confessed should be feeling awkward. Wei Fen Qing doesn’t know if she should delete the video or not. She can’t decide whether she wants Huo Ting En to know about the confession. She decides to keep it for now.
Huo Ting En takes some time away from the restaurant to go camping.
Before heading out, he makes sure the matter regarding Wei Cheng Yang is taken care of. With Peng Xiao Bin informing him that he’s gotten Wei Cheng Yang’s phone number, he asks Peng Xiao Bin to call Wei Cheng Yang and tell him about an internship opportunity at Yanis. It’s his way of preventing Wei Fen Qing and her family member from becoming like himself and his sister where they couldn’t get along with each other and only leaving behind regrets.
Wei Fen Qing hears about this internship that Wei Cheng Yang has been offered during her morning shopping expedition for ingredients with Ah Wei. She hears We Cheng Yang speak about an internship, but not the fact that it’s at Yanis or is a group that ventures in the food and hospitality industry when we hear Wei Cheng Yang tell Wei Fen Qing it has nothing to do with cuisine. When Wei Fen Qing hears it has no connection to cuisine, she appears disappointed for a brief moment before expressing support. She tells him that she will take care of any problems. He only needs to do well.
One problem that Wei Fen Qing seemingly has to take care of is their mother’s wish for Wei Cheng Yang to reclaim their father’s Curry King title. She asks for their father’s help. She visits their father’s grave at the mountainside and asks him to bless them and protect them. Allow her to reclaim his Curry King title.
Huo Ting En had taken a brief trip to the convenience store to (apparently) get battery supplies the previous night. That trip had seen him find a wallet on the ground that belonged to a person named, Wu Ping An. He encountered a suspicious female stranger and her companion who’d asked for the wallet. Huo Ting En returned it to her after she could reveal the wallet to belong to her.
We see Huo Ting En by the riverside—fishing. Wei Fen Qing is around the area after visiting her father at his grave. She’d come to find him after a search around this scenery she remembers to be one she saw in the photographs she found in the glove compartment in Huo Ting En’s car (Episode 6). Wei Fen Qing had searched for him after a call came in from Peng Xiao Bin asking if she’d seen him. Peng Xiao Bin was concerned about Huo Ting En missing from his post because Huo Ting En needs to prepare for a shareholder’s meeting the next day where he feels Huo Ting En’s stepmum will use the opportunity to bring Huo Ting En down.
Wei Fen Qing feels the present time to be good for a chat after Huo Ting En explains his reason for being here is to be by himself. She begins with telling him about her dad passing away from a car accident and how her family starved and almost ended up on the street until Uncle Spare Ribs (we’re guessing this uncle sold spare ribs :oP :oP) who took them under his belt and taught them how to operate a night market stall.
This seems to be Wei Fen Qing’s way of getting Huo Ting En to open up when she asks him to tell her about his childhood. Huo Ting En is reluctant to, but ultimately does after he’s told to just say it out. He says his father also died when he was young. His surname was originally ‘Song’ until it became ‘Huo’ after his mother married Huo Zhen Nian. His mother met Huo Zhen Nian after he, his sister and his mother went to work at a very big restaurant the Huo family opened.
Wei Fen Qing decides to move onto talking about sweet memories after she seems to sense the sombre mood that followed after Huo Ting En finished. Wei Fen Qing continues even when Huo Ting En doesn’t wish to continue. She forces Huo Ting En to listen as she talks about the reason why she wanted to learn Curry Lobster. It’s that she’d found the Curry Lobster her dad made super tasty that she wants to learn how to make the taste and have it recorded. She talks about how Wei Cheng Yang isn’t able to imagine how good it tasted because he never had it before.
Wei Fen Qing to expresses to Huo Ting En she’s decided to let Wei Cheng Yang to go on his own path. Huo Ting En expresses his approval of the decision with a bit of sadness. He didn’t have the chance to do what Wei Fen Qing did—tell his sister he supported her. People only know how to cherish them after losing them, he says afterwards. With these words, Wei Fen Qing comes to realise why Huo Ting En had allowed her to go to Ah Wei and patch things up with him. He didn’t want her to have regrets.
Wei Fen Qing also finds out why Huo Ting En agreed to teach her how to make Curry Lobster. She’d asked why Huo Ting En agreed to. Huo Ting En tells her she and his sister are similar in personality. This is the reason he agreed to teach her how to make Curry Lobster. Their talk changes to lightness when Huo Ting En says Wei Fen Qing fails to compare in one area: she’s not as pretty compared to his sister. The comment gains Huo Ting En a hit to his arm to which he complains of how violent Wei Fen Qing is and how she just loves to hit people.
Night falls after Wei Fen Qing and Huo Ting En spend some time in the daylight gathering firewood and fishing for food. The atmosphere between Wei Fen Qing and Huo Ting En is fun and normal up until Wei Fen Qing becomes highly strung from a direct and lingering gaze from Huo Ting En that brought back thoughts of his video confession. Seemingly to keep distance from Huo Ting En, she declines offer to have some food when Huo Ting En asks if she wanted any of the food they cooked.
Huo Ting En suggests they should do something else since she’s not hungry. Wei Fen Qing is alarmed when Huo Ting En leans in towards her and turns off the lantern above her. She’s completely frightened when he takes hold of her two legs and makes her extend them. What she imagines to take place doesn’t take place, however. Huo Ting En simply wishes her to enjoy the sight of the starry skies above.
Wei Fen Qing finds herself with a racing heart when she stares at Huo Ting En after he speaks of how the stars in the sky is beautiful and quite therapeutic. She decides it’s time to get clarification on the matter regarding Huo Ting En’s video confession. Her words are confusing to Huo Ting En when she begins talking about how liking a person isn’t easy; how falling in love is even harder; then how saying it out is even more harder. Wei Fen Qing then tells Huo Ting En she only sees him as just her chef. Huo Ting En is still unable to understand her meaning or the reason for the words she was saying to him. It’s not until she deeply apologises and says she isn’t able to accept his love that Huo Ting En realises she’s rejecting a confession. However, he’s baffled why he’s being rejected when he hadn’t confessed. Wei Fen Qing brings out the video and shows him the proof.
Seeing the video confession, Huo Ting En is shocked and doesn’t believe the person he’s seeing in the video is him. When he accepts it may be him in the video, he says the words were drunk words. Wei Fen Qing is taken aback by his response. She is offended he wasn’t taking responsibility for the confession he made. Huo Ting En is surprised by Wei Fen Qing’s desire for him to take responsibility for his confession. He retorts if dating her is how she wants him to take responsibility for his confession. Wei Fen Qing, of course, comes back with a definitive ‘No’. Huo Ting En then finds it odd the recording was on Wei Fen Qing’s phone. He wants to know why Wei Fen Qing was recording him. Wei Fen Qing isn’t able to explain this.
Huo Ting En continues a flurry of questions that brings Huo Ting En to the point of asking if it’s Wei Fen Qing who likes him. Offended by the question and seemingly hit to her ego, she tells Huo Ting En that she doesn’t act coy. When she likes someone, she’s very direct. She pops a leg by Huo Ting En’s side to show how direct she is when she likes someone. Huo Ting En decides to call a truce: both have not fallen in love with each other and it was all a misunderstanding.
The episode ends with Huo Ting En having trouble getting any sleep when Wei Fen Qing snores, sleep talks, swims in her sleep and slaps him every five minutes with her arm.
The next morning, sleep deprived, he pleas for Wei Fen Qing (who’s still sleeping happily), to allow him to sleep. Half an hour is enough for him, he says. Otherwise, if she continues hitting him, he’ll turn hostile towards her. He won’t let her off on it.
Suddenly, scenes of the drunken night after the wine party enter Huo Ting En’s mind. He recalls how he and Wei Fen Qing came to wear the clothes they wore when they woke up the morning following their drunken night.
