Wei Yun hopes Chu Yu genuinely means it when she promises to be honest with him, as that’s what family are with each other. On their short journey back to Chu Yu’s room (she had chosen to be carried on his back in the end), they get to talking about Chu Jin being a reason Young Master Sun drugged her—he was trying to please her. Wei Yun was silent hearing this. This leads Chu Yu to ask him about whether he found it unbelievable a family member could let something like that happen to her.
Wei Yun tells her that he can’t say much about other families, but he would never let anything like that happen in his family. This is the point where Wei Yun poses his question about whether Chu Yu sees him as family, and if she does, she would be honest with him because this is what defines a family.
Chu Yu tells him that she does consider him. She adds that she’s already told him about this embarrassing fact about her family to try to assure him. She tells him there was nothing more she could keep from him.
His expression was unsure but hopeful when he posed the question. When she answered him that she did, a smile spread across his face when she told him she did. Wei Yun appears to still have reservations about her. He decides that he’ll have faith in her words and believe she isn’t hiding anything from him, which reflects his more positive feelings towards her. However, he also tells her that he’ll remember her words and will hold her to them, which seems to suggest that he’s yet to find anything to go against her claims. However, he’s not completely at ease about it.
The trust from Wei Yun appears to have caused some guilt in Chu Yu. Later in her room, while talking with Wanyue, she reveals that had it not been for the timely bark of Xiaoqi, she’d have unintentionally expressed her motives.
Arriving back at her place, Chu Yu is left with Tuantuan to be treated while Chu Linyang suggests Wei Yun and himself leave them to focus on the treatment and have a walk around the garden. The atmosphere is tense between the two when Wei Yun makes the move to speak. He makes a comment about how Chu Linyang’s never visited the Wei household until now and wonders if it’s because he’s dissatisfied with Chu Yu marrying into the Wei family.
Looking quite on guard, as if suspecting Wei Yun’s out to get information out of him, Chu Linyang gives out nothing. He denies the dissatisfaction over the marriage and tells him he’s always supportive of whatever Chu Yu’s set her mind on because her mind can’t be changed once she’s decided. He adds that as her brother, he won’t embarrass her.
Chu Linyang’s claim that he’s never embarrassed Chu Yu sees Wei Yun chastise Chu Linyang about the drugging incident. He questions Chu Linyang for bringing Chu Jin along despite knowing the resentment she has towards Chu Yu and wonders whether he cares about Chu Yu.
Chu Linyang accepts responsibility for his oversight but moves to question Wei Yun’s role in all of this. He seems to be insinuating that Wei Yun failed to do anything to prevent Chu Yu from getting harmed. The rebuttal sees Wei Yun let him know that it was he who helped Chu Yu out of her predicament. Not only that, he reminds Chu Linyang that it was he who held him back from going after Chu Yu when she left to go out back, leading to the incident.
The conversation between Wei Yun and Chu Linyang got through a little more about the way Wei Yun regards Chu Yu. There’s still suspicion, but he also cares about her safety—if not because he’s starting to develop a liking towards her, then at least it’s because he regards her as part of his family.
Although the previous scene saw Wei Yun softening his view of Chu Yu, he’s not fully convinced about her having no hidden motives other than marrying into the family for status—the fact that Wei Yun is very much aware of Chu Linyang’s intentions to block him from following Chu Yu suggests that Wei Yun’s not letting go of his suspicions. The faith that he placed in Chu Yu to tell him the truth can be seen as affording her some trust to be honest with him because he genuinely hopes she can be honest with him like a member of his family is. However, it can also be seen as Wei Yun continuing his plan to let her go about in her business so that in time she ends up revealing her motives to him herself.
Wei Yun’s attention to Chu Linyang’s oversight of Chu Jin’s resentment towards Chu Yu comes off as a level of care for Chu Yu, but it’s not for sure that it’s exclusively because he’s starting to like her. In fact, it feels like he brought it up because he found Chu Linyang’s claim about not embarrassing Chu Yu a contradiction to what almost did happen and wanted him to see that he failed to consider and care for Chu Yu like a brother—like a family member—should.
Chu Yu treated, she’s returns to her room, leaving with advice from Tuantuan to drink a bowl of milk before heading off to bed to treat any lingering effects of the drug. The advice is noted by Wei Yun, who took it upon himself to send Chu Yu a bowl of milk through Wanyue. The change in Wei Yun sees Wanyue suggesting that maybe Chu Yu could directly ask Wei Yun for the fish-shaped tally to enter the Arsenal Bureau.
The tally is the only thing that stops Chu Yu from progressing with her investigations. Her previous problem of not knowing where the Arsenal Bureau is had been solved by Chu Linyang. His search saw the Arsenal Bureau being discovered at a location in the forest.
Chu Yu rejects the idea of going to Wei Yun directly for the tally. Investigating the Arsenal Bureau is deceiving His Majesty, and so she believes Wei Yun wouldn’t help her so easily. She says this not knowing Wei Yun’s meeting with Li Qiba in Episode 7 included talking about the crossbow arrow design his brother left him. Chu Yu was going to try to find the tally herself.
Chu Linyang escorts Tuantuan back to her place. The sight of Chu Linyang waiting by the carriage with his hand extended to help her down. The sight captivates Tuantuan for a moment before Chu Linyang calls her out of her daze.
Tuantuan takes his hand for support before suddenly asking to be his physician. He’s momentarily shocked and politely rejects her at first, telling her that he does have some old injuries but they don’t bother him. But he’s soon convinced by her eagerness to improve her medical skills, which are meant to come off as quite impressive. She’s able to diagnose issues by looking at the appearance, breath rate and the walk without needing to feel the pulse.
The Song siblings all return to face a bit of punishment. Song Zhao was not happy they attended Wei Yun’s banquet when they’d been told to stay far away from the Wei family to avoid His Majesty accusing them of becoming close with military families. Interestingly, Song Zhao was also angry they went to the banquet but didn’t take him with them. Seeing Tuantuan return home with Chu Linyang saw him criticise her for it.
Tuantuan wasn’t too happy about the double standards: The Crown Prince could be with concubines and tarnish her reputation, but she couldn’t be seen with a man for whom she was only serving as a physician. At this point, that’s all it is, but later it’s a different story.
Fortunately, Song Zhao seems to be a good person. Seeing his daughter so upset, he thinks about reconsidering her engagement to the Crown Prince.
Chu Linyang has Chu Jin kneel in Chu’s Ancestral Hall for not doing anything when she learned Young Master Sun was setting up Chu Yu. Chu Linyang sees the behaviour as spoilt and needing to be corrected, afraid that she’d travel down the wrong path otherwise.
During this punishment, Chu Linyang is made to see his bias towards Chu Jin. It’s what’s behind Chu Jin’s current behaviour. She acts only because she wants her brother to pay her some attention.
Xie Yun has him see that this whole time he only took Chu Yu’s suffering into consideration (it’s unclear exactly what kind of suffering Xie Yun’s referring to, but possibly it’s related to being on the battlefield with him and their father, maybe the rumours surrounding her). What Xie Yun also has her son see is how well she cares for her. Chu Jin was the one by her side whenever she missed him. When their family fell, Chu Jin thought of every way to save money. Xie Yun recognised that Chu Jin may be naughty, but she wants Chu Linyang to see that she’s not a bad person.
Now that Chu Linyang has heard Chu Jin’s feelings, he promises he’ll be nicer to her. He also hopes that his mother—who has been seen to always take Chu Jin’s side—will be nicer to Chu Yu, too.
Back at the Marquis of Zhenguo’s Mansion, some of Wei Yun’s sisters-in-law prepare to say their goodbyes as they leave the Marquis of Zhenguo’s Mansion. Before they leave, Wei Yun hands over the spears—which his brothers used in battle—to the sisters-in-law. He tells them he’s not seeing them off—that is, he’s not bidding farewell to them. He’s there to gift them the spears.
As gratitude, fifth sister-in-law Xie Jiu plays a song on the gu zheng instrument. The other sisters-in-law decide to show gratitude by giving a performance of their martial arts skills with the spears.
The music and the sight of the sisters-in-law displaying their martial arts skills saddens Wei Yun. He expresses that his purpose of wielding the spear and fighting in battles was only for his family members so that they could always be happy. It was never for glory. Watching the sisters-in-law wielding his brothers’ spears, now without their husbands, he feels that he had failed in protecting them.
Chu Yu has him look again. She wants him to see that these women are strong. They know martial arts and can wield a spear. She tells him that no one at the Marquis of Zhenguo’s Mansion needs protecting. In an attempt to try and cheer Wei Yun up, she moves to pluck a begonia blossom from a tree beside her and gifts it to him.
How sweet of Chu Yu.
With divorce letters in hand, three of Wei Yun’s sister-in-laws—Zhang Han, Xie Jiu, and Yao Jie—leave the household. Xie Jiu and Yao Jie leave without their children. They can’t bear to part with their children, but there is fear that their children won’t be well protected if they leave with them, so the children are left to stay at the Marquis of Zhenguo’s Mansion.
At nightfall, Chu Yu has Wanyue distract Wei Qiu’s attention so she is able to sneak past him and enter Wei Yun’s room to look for the tally to the Arsenal Bureau. She uses Wei Yun’s fear of dogs to achieve her mission. Letting in Xiao Qi, she pretends to look for the puppy.
Wei Yun may be afraid of Xiao Qi. He was even captivated by her silhouette a couple times. However, he wasn’t so afraid and distracted that he wasn’t aware of Chu Yu’s ulterior motives.
After she pretended she found Xiao Qi after getting her hands on the fish-shaped tally and was told to take her leave, Wei Yun gives off the impression that he had allowed Chu Yu to do whatever she wanted so he could discover what she was after. Even though Wei Yun is less hostile towards her and is showing her another instance of being captivated by her, she hasn’t managed to fool him.
For taking away the fish-shaped tally, Wei Yun already has a plan in store to give her a problem.
Lu Qiba invites Wei Yun to the Arsenal Bureau to have some tea now that he’s the Marquis of Zhenguo. Although Wei Yun is now the commander of the Arsenal Bureau, there’s no more respect than before he inherited the title. There was no move to apologise to Wei Yun for the rumours he started to make things difficult for him and no hurry to talk about the investigations relating to the octagonal crossbow trigger. Wei Yun still had to force the conversation to the investigation for Li Qiba to talk about it.
Li Qiba’s findings? The mechanism of the trigger wasn’t made in the Arsenal Bureau but was based on the Arsenal Bureau’s blueprints. He believes it’s not possible to make it without their blueprints. This confirms that someone in the Arsenal Bureau is a traitor.
