Fight For Love (Shan He Zhen / 山河枕) is a light political intrigue drama set in the Central Plains, where two nations, Great Sui and North Qi, have been at war with each other for many years.

At the centre of the battles and war between the two states is Great Sui’s supposedly classified octagonal crossbow arrow. The weapon had only ever been used in a test environment in Great Sui. As it was discovered to have a recoil that was so powerful that it not only hurt the enemy but the archer as well, it was never deployed in actual battle. Yet, somehow, it appeared on the battlefield and in enemy hands.

The battle at Fengling City suffered heavy losses by the Chu Army because of the surprise appearance of the octagonal crossbow. Three cities were lost, and amongst the lives lost was General Chu Jianchang (Gao Yi), who led the Chu Army and is the father of the drama’s heroine, Chu Yu (Victoria Song).

Yet again, in a battle at Baidi Valley (which we will see in the drama), the octagonal crossbow appeared. 70,000 troops were lost during an ambush, with six of the seven generals of the Wei family being killed, leaving only the drama’s hero, Wei Yun (Ding Yuxi), alive.

A traitor is within the Arsenal Bureau leaking Great Sui’s military secrets. This traitor is small fry in the grand scheme of things. The real enemy, the instigator and mastermind behind the appearance of classified weaponry; the deaths of Chu Jianchang, the 70,000 Wei soldiers and the six Wei generals; and the death of the parents of the drama’s second male lead, Gu Chusheng (Fu Xinbo), is someone within Great Sui who is unassuming and appears quite loyal.

Of the dramas that was released in the 2025, Fight For Love was one that attracted our attention. For one, Ding Yuxi’s in this drama. Having rediscovered the actor in 2024 with Love Game in Eastern Fantasy and Melody of Golden Age and really enjoying these two dramas, we were looking forward to watching his performance in Fight For Love. Again, Ding Yuxi doesn’t disappoint.

Ding Yuxi was particularly captivating in the first five or six episodes where he lost his whole family in the ambush at Baidi Valley where he builds up to a wail following the death of his beloved older brother, Wei Jun. Another set of captivating scenes is when Wei Yun was imprisoned, blamed for the defeat; when he was before His Majesty just before his release; and when he walked up to Chu Yu in a snowy backdrop with his umbrella upon his release.

The styling of the Wei Yun character is also something that stands out. We quite like the costumes and the hairstyling. The metal arch pieces that follow along the braids on top of the head really catches our eyes.

Story-wise, the opening handful of episodes were attention-grabbing. The last dozen episodes were really good as well as it focused on the main story arc. The romance arc of Wei Yun and Chu Yu we liked and there were some cool scenes in the last quarter of the drama. The middle sections of the drama, though, it could have been tighter. It had a little too much focus on developing supporting character pairings which slowed the drama down. The only supporting character pairing we thought should have the focus it had in the drama is the Eldest Princess Li Changming (Joe Chen) and Xue Hanmei (Liang Xuefeng) pairing as it contributed to the main story arc.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy our Fight For Love (2025) recap. It’s a drama we actually had the fun novelty of catching on Zhejiang Satellite TV in China during our family visit there in November 2025. It was a good drama to wind down to after a day of exploring and enjoying the traditional and modern sights and delicious food and milk teas in China.

Fight for Love Episode 1 Recap

Fight for Love Episode 1

Dressed in a free-flowing red dress, Chu Yu stands on the rooftop near the gate of Huajing City, waiting for the return of the Wei Army.

Not long after, Wei Yun, a young general and the seventh son of the Wei family, rides through the Huajing City gate with his older brothers behind him. A smile is spread across his youthful face. The Wei Army has returned victorious.

Chu Yu gets the announcement from her maid, Wanyue (Zhang Yumeng). Chu Yu begins her dance, which draws the crowd’s attention. It has them applauding, all the while talking about her eccentricity and having become a laughingstock after being abandoned by Senior Compiler of the Hanlin Academy, Gu Chusheng. Some wonder if she’s intentionally there to challenge the Wei family after her family’s fall.

Wei Yun thinks it’s Gu Chusheng Chu Yu is waiting for, which can’t be right, since Chu Yu specifically questions Wei Yun where the rest of his family is when they come face to face. But she doesn’t clear things up, making it seem like that’s exactly who she’s waiting for and intending to confront Gu Chusheng on his marriage to Wang Linlang (He Wenxiao) from the Duke of Ning’s noble house.

Chu Yu and Gu Chusheng used to be a couple. When Gu Chusheng was to be exiled to the south-west border, Chu Yu willingly followed him there. She was so willing, she even asked whether he dared to take her with him.

However, sometime after his return from exile and having somehow become an academician, the couple separated. Chu Yu’s resentment towards Gu Chusheng stems from this period where she had begged for his help in convincing His Majesty to send reinforcements to the battle in Fengling City, only to be rejected. He told her that he was just an academician and held no influence in the matter. His refusal to try had her think he was only using her and the Chu family to climb up the ladder to a position in the palace.

Gu Chusheng goes up to the bridge where Chu Yu had descended. He also believes Chu Yu’s there to stop him in his marriage and can’t move on.

He comes off cold, playing the part of the power-hungry guy who used Chu Yu to climb the career ladder, but there’s more to his true intentions than the scene leads the viewers to believe. Like her, behind the rumours and what appears to be a shallow desire is a different goal of truth and justice.

Wei Yun’s first brother, Wei Jun (Zhang Tianyang), arrives. The person Chu Yu is waiting for. She proposes to be his other half, which adds to the image people have of her only wanting to marry into a good family after her own fell. This is all pretence, something Wei Jun picks up after his rejection and Chu Yu’s hint of her true motives. “Chu Yu is a Chu. Although the Chu family fell, the martial spirit remains unchanged.”

As Chu Yu’s father had just fallen for the country, proper conduct is to observe three years of mourning. The Chu Family can’t hold any celebrations during this period. Chu Yu’s assurance she and her family hadn’t forgotten this suggested to Wei Jun that Chu Yu was doing all this to divert suspicion (i.e., avoid suspicion of her approach towards Wei Jun as relating to an investigation of the Arsenal Bureau, which could get back to the court and cause issues).

During a private meeting between the two, Wei Jun expresses having seen the loyalty Chu Yu had when she accompanied Gu Chusheng. This act is unlike the improper and rebellious behaviour she shows to the public. He sees her as true and faithful.

With that said, Chu Yu reveals to Wei Jun her intention of investigating how the octagonal crossbow (which uses a trigger based on the Wei Family design) got into the hands of North Qi. It has Wei Jun accuse her of being daring. Firstly, Arsenal Bureau is under his command, and here she was standing before him speaking of this matter. Secondly, he could very well be that traitor she was looking for. (He isn’t, though.)

The talk is interrupted by Wei Yun, who rushes into the scene. Chu Yu’s whip flies at him, but it doesn’t hit him as he catches it in his grip. They get into a brief fight which sees them equally skilled in martial arts before Wei Yun is warned by his brother to stop. Wei Yun is told to apologise for his rude behaviour, which Wei Yun reluctantly does. (It’s also passed-mentioned by Wei Jun that Wei Yun is three years younger than Chu Yu, just to give an age range between these two characters.)

Wei Jun moves to end their meeting and suggests meeting up again to discuss things again the next day at Qinxi Valley (which is a garden belonging to Great Sui’s Eldest Princess, Li Changming).

Wei Yun is pulled along by his brother to get going, but he stays behind somehow to confront Chu Yu later that night. He’s suspicious of her reasons for showing interest in his brother. This indicates he didn’t hear any of that discussed between her and Wei Jun when he and his other brothers were eavesdropping on them, but he suspects she’s got some kind of motive.

Chu Yu won’t let out her reasons for the approach, only that she won’t hurt him. That seemed to have Wei Yun a little surprised and confused about whether she was genuinely with Wei Jun or not. Wei Yun doesn’t seem to be against Chu Yu being together with Wei Jun. He just wants to know his brother won’t get hurt. Chu Yu doesn’t answer. She only challenges Wei Yun to a duel: win and she’ll tell him.

Unfortunately, Wei Yun lost. Wei Yun had the upper hand at the beginning, but it became a disadvantage as his strength had sent Chu Yu sliding across the ground towards the cliff’s edge, putting her in danger of falling over it. Moving to stop her momentum and flipping her overhead, Chu Yu had put him in a losing position where one move could send him over the cliff’s edge.

Back at the Wei Family’s Marquis of Zhenguo’s Mansion, the heads of the family, Marquis of Zhenguo Wei Zhong (Xiu Qing) and Marchioness of Zhenguo Liu Xueyang (Fang Xiaoli) (father and mother of the Wei brothers), the Wei generals and their wives enjoy a feast together. Chu Yu’s proposal to marry Wei Jun is the focus of their banter. Wei Jun avoids mentioning anything. He only casually mentions Chu Yu wanting to help hold up the family, which gets him a bit of teasing, seeing it as praise and fondness towards Chu Yu.

The family seems to be in agreement with Chu Yu joining the Wei family. Wei Yun’s fourth brother, Wei Feng (Ding Ye), expressed finding her a rather straightforward kind of person who’s interesting and suits Wei Jun well. Wei Yun’s second brother, Wei Shu (Wang Sen), agrees. No one seemed to reject it until Wei Yun’s second sister-in-law, Jiang Chun (An Yuexi), got them thinking with the mention of wanting a sister-in-law who could help mother-in-law, Liu Xueyang, manage the household.

This had Wei Jun come to Chu Yu’s defence, explaining how she was born to a military family and was raised on the frontier, and so naturally, she’s unlike Huajing women. This then has Liu Xueyang disapprove of Wei Jun marrying Chu Yu, bringing up the rumours of eloping for love and causing a scandal. She seems to give Chu Yu credit for her loyalty but still thinks it’s not a good idea to intermarry with such a family.

Wei Jun was one that appeared to show displeasure. It’s unclear if the displeasure suggested that Wei Jun was unhappy about his mother’s advice against marrying Chu Yu, or the misunderstanding reminded him of the octagonal crossbow and Chu Yu’s request, but he excused himself from the table to head to the Arsenal Bureau. There, he tries firing the octagonal crossbow and finds the recoil strong and painful. It brings up the point of why this weapon was never used by the Great Sui army, causing him to dwell on how its design could have possibly come into the hands of North Qi.

The episode ends with several families and officials meeting at Qinxi Valley. The Duke of Ning’s daughter, Wang Linlang, is there accompanied by Gu Chusheng, who is now married to her. The Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, Cao Yan (Cheng Cheng), and Young Master Sun (Ding Nan) are there. Two women who go by the names Miss Zheng and Miss Zhou are there. Chu Yu and her maid, Wanyue, are there, too.

A greeting and praise towards Gu Chusheng sees it turn into a mocking of Chu Yu and an insinuation that Gu Chusheng’s rise towards the top was not gained by his own efforts. Miss Zheng had flattered Gu Chusheng by mentioning how everyone in Huajing regarded Gu Chusheng as handsome and talented and was highly favoured by court. Cao Yan used this to bring in Chu Yu and Wang Linlang as his stepping stones. While Young Master Sun talked negatively of Chu Yu because she grew up on the frontier in the army and seemed to suggest not knowing boundaries between men and women. It leads him to take a swing at Chu Yu’s father, too, mentioning the shame he felt for General Chu Jianchang.
