Qingzhou was just part of a diversionary tactic. The North Qi wanted to make it look like they were planning to attack Qingzhou. However, Fengling is where the war erupts.

With Chu Linyang having moved to strengthen defences and improvements made to Lu Qiba’s octagonal crossbow, North Qi’s first attempt to attack resulted in a retreat. Their defences were looking promising. However, the North Qi had more offences coming, so the victory was short-lived. Their second round of attacks were too power for Chu Linyang and his soldiers. They had returned with octagonal crossbow chariots that fired arrows with explosives attached.

Gunpowder cylinders were attached to the arrows and catapulted through the air with North Qi’s war chariots. Upon impact, they exploded, injuring Chu Linyang’s soldiers and destroying structures.

Chu Linyang, Chu Yu, Chu Shan and their soldiers battled hard, but they were no match. In the end, Chu Yu made the decision to call the troops to retreat at the time Chu Linyang had taken arrows to his leg in his efforts to save Chu Shan from them. Even if they could hold on for the time being, the frequent arrivals of the North Qi war chariots was going to ultimately exhaust them.

Returning back to their residence, Lu Qiba notes that the mechanism of North Qi’s octagonal crossbow chariots is still the original and expects them to break down in a few days. But the power was still great, and they must find a way to counter.

Chu Yu also mentions the possibility of the production place for war chariots to be near Fengling because of how frequently North Qi was able to bring these heavy chariots onto the battlefield. Adding to this thought, Chu Linyang mentions noticing a strong sulphur smell from the chariots and the arrows. This has Chu Yu suspect the hot spring villa and how there was something not quite right about the place. It leads her to make a decision to set off towards it to investigate with Lu Qiba accompanying.

In Qingzhou, Wei Yun is already suspecting North Qi’s true target isn’t Qingzhou. After Shen You and Commander Gao arrived with their troops, Wei Yun had sent a vanguard to seek the North Qi out to engage with them. The result was a short fight with no further move to chase after them. North Qi remained stationed and surrounded them without attack. This was what made him suspect North Qi of having a different target.

Gu Chusheng had been asked if he found anything out from his interrogation of Xu Lingzhang. He denies gaining any useful information. The detained military governor only told Gu Chusheng that North Qi intended to send another 20,000 troops to take Qingzhou. This information is likely false, as later in the episode, it was revealed North Qi didn’t even have any spare soldiers to defend the royal court let alone send more to Qingzhou.

Shortly after, a report comes in about Fengling and North Qi’s attack on it. Fengling was in need of reinforcements, but with the situation in Qingzhou, Wei Yun couldn’t make a move to provide it. Redeploying any troops from Qingzhou to aid Fengling was not an option as Wei Yun had mentioned earlier that his army and North Qi was on par with each other. Qingzhou would be left vulnerable if any of his soldiers were to go to Fengling.

Wei Yun orders an urgent report back to the palace and a request for reinforcements. They could only do this must an hope reinforcements would be granted. The hope is low, though, as there were many voices in the court, which could affect whether the Emperor would actually deploy any reinforcements, and if he did, the reinforcements may not arrive on time.

So, Wei Yun decides on using a diversionary tactic of his own to give Great Sui a glimmer of hope in this rather grim situation. It involves tricking Shen You and Commander Gao into believing he’s still standing guard in Qingzhou when, in fact, he’s left for North Qi and heading straight for Su Can to kill him. Song Wenchang would stand in Wei Yun’s place, pretending to be him, and hopefully Shen You and Commander Yao aren’t any wiser until after Wei Yun has completed his own mission.

Gu Chusheng saw his plan as risky, yet Wei Yun had appeared so confident he could complete this mission, and in four days. The reason why is that Wei Yun had an insider in North Qi. Even if he couldn’t complete the mission, he’d have this insider complete it. In a private chat between them, Wei Yun tells Gu Chusheng that he will complete this mission even if it causes mutual destruction. In other words, he was going to go all out and take North Qi down along with him even if it kills him.

Wei Yun’s commitment and sacrifice for Great Sui drew great respect from Gu Chusheng. On his own, he lifted his tea cup and toasted Wei Yun. It was a contrast to sometime ago where Gu Chusheng refused to lift his wine cup to him and where he thrusted a knife into Wei Yun for real. Even though it was all an act to reveal Xu Lingzhang’s true self, the animosity towards Wei Yun was hard to deny.

Wei Yun seemed surprise at Gu Chusheng’s sudden show of respect, but he also lifts his cup, as Gu Chusheng had promised Wei Yun that he’d do everything he can to buy the time he needs to carry out his mission. It was a mission which would save Fengling and Qingzhou from falling into the hands of North Qi, Great Sui from being annexed by them, and it would help Chu Yu, too.

Song Wenchang manages to stay undiscovered for while, long enough for Wei Yun and his troops to make it deep into the heart of North Qi. Although, Shen You are none the wiser for the time being, Wei Yun does get spotted by North Qi intel. It gets reported by a North Qi subject who goes by the name Gongsun Lan, City Lord of Yun. Wei Yun’s identity isn’t mentioned, as the intelligence he received apparently only know as much as the troops being from Great Sui.

King of North Qi Su Can moves to hand down an order to deal with the Great Sui troops, as he suspects them of coming for the royal court, but Eldest Princess Yunyang stops him. Her focus is on ensuring her plan to take Great Sui in one fell swoop isn’t ruined over some “minor soldiers” from Great Sui. She doesn’t suspect it could ever be Wei Yun leading them. As far as she’s concerned, Wei Yun is in Qingzhou guarding it.

The concern of having no spare soldiers defending from attacks on the royal court is not something Su Can can permit, so he moved to withdraw half of the troops from Qingzhou, which doesn’t please Eldest Princess Yunyang.

Although Su Can sits on the throne, there’s an obvious power struggle between them. The war in Fengling was revealed to have been started by the Eldest Princess Yunyang. Su Can revealed he had only wanted to pin down Qingzhou. It’s looking like that glimmer of hope Wei Yun wanted is in motion. Recall how the troops in Qingzhou was said to be on par? With Su Can recalling half the troops back to the palace, it should mean Great Sui has a bit of hope after the withdrawal in terms of number of soldiers following the attack on Qingzhou that ends up happening after Shen You sees through Song Wenchang’s act.

Despite Song Wenchang’s best efforts, Shen You started suspecting the act when “Wei Yun” didn’t react to what was happening in Fengling. The city had entered a state of emergency, and Chu Yu was there. Based on the rumours about his relationship with Chu Yu back in Huajing, Shen You found it unbelievable Wei Yun would remain so calm.

So, to confirm his suspicions, Shen You shot an arrow up at Song Wenchang. The skill level didn’t match. Song Wenchang had barely sensed the arrow and deflected it away.

With no Wei Yun leading the troops in Qingzhou, Shen You has Commander Gao give the order to start their attack on the city. Their troops scale the wall, forcing Song Wenchang, Song Shilan and Gu Chusheng into battle.
