behind the video

This dinosaur model is an assignment given at the end of a modelling module of the multimedia course. Basically, I was given this toy dinosaur and was required to replicate the toy exactly in the virtual environment, using everything that I've learnt in the 3D modelling module.

For the modelling part of the assignment, we were required to include at least two texture mapping techniques and rendering it as a QuickTime VR file.

Much like the real toy, each part of the dinosaur: the head, body, tail, legs, and arms were modelled separately using the box method. Some of the main tools used are the Extrude, Taper, and Mirror—the last tool listed being quite a handy one. A trick I found during the modelling process is that I only had to model one side of the dinosaur before using the mirror tool to duplicate the other side. That allowed me to cut down half the workload and time (what a wonderful tool it is!).

To finish off the model, three types of texture maps were used. Additive maps were used to form the general colour of the dinosaur; bump mapping was used to create the scaly texture of the model, and finally, the alpha maps were used to create the dark patterns running through the top of the toy and the legs.
